Of Time And Tides - a mixed media installation

Flotsam - a mixed media installation at Galleon Arts.

Flotsam is inspired by living on the river in London, watching the tides come and go, carrying all manner of detritus on its journey. I wanted to capture this sense by creating a hanging sculpture with found fragments, reflecting a moment of drift and literally suspending it in time and space.

Among the rubbish and driftwood were once loved items. Were they lost or thrown away? What stories were hidden in the flotsam?

With this in mind I collected personal stories and reflections about the river, together with elements of its history. I screen-printed these stories onto the hanging fragments to emphasise the notion of our fleeting existence against the constant flow of the river. People come and go, our treasures and ephemera become lost, broken, discarded, and our stories eventually disappear.
